If you have over 80k miles on your head then its a good idea to replace your valve guides. Made from cast iron these guides incorporate a spiral groove design to provide excellent oil retention which in turn keeps your valve stem lubricated and prevents wear. Guides are normally overlooked but are a common problem causing oil loss and a smoky exhaust. If you have ever overheated your head be sure to check for loose or cracked guides!
